Lake Conroe guide checks in as fall transition begins

Reel Report by Capt. David Dillman

I reached out to Collin Edwards of Lake Conroe Fishing Adventures to check on how his September fishing has been going. He's never at a loss for words, so here's what he had to say.

"With the start of the '-ber' months, referring to the last four months of the year, Lake Conroe is beginning its transition toward fall. Dissolved oxygen levels remain low, and the thermocline in the main lake is currently around 25-27 feet, becoming much shallower in the creek arms, where it can be found in as little as 8-12 feet of water.

"Hybrid striped bass can be found anywhere from 10 to 22 feet and should continue pushing into the shallower end of that range in greater numbers towards the end of September. Early mornings are producing surface-feeding activity, and on days with increased cloud cover, the top-water action can continue later into the morning across open-water areas.

"Largemouth bass can be found in 10 to 18 feet of water around pond dams and other structure. As the month progresses, look for schooling baitfish moving toward the backs of coves and creek arms, with bass following closely behind.

"Catfish remain productive around baited locations using range cubes in approximately 10 to 18 feet of water, with the most productive depth depending heavily on available oxygen. Blue catfish have also been observed breaching the surface over flats and ledges in areas around 22 feet deep.

"Bluegill can still be caught around shallow structure, docks and brush piles in approximately 8-16 feet of water.

"As water temperatures begin to cool, anglers should watch for increasingly concentrated schools of baitfish, particularly during the early morning hours. Finding the bait will continue to be one of the biggest keys to finding active fish as Lake Conroe transitions into its fall pattern."
