Lake Conroe catches still steady despite August heat

I received a report from Lake Conroe fishing guide Collin Edwards, but before I jump into that report, let me sadly announce that a fisherman was found dead in Moses Lake on Wednesday afternoon.

Lake Conroe is still producing steady catches despite the August heat. Here’s what Edwards had to say about the fishing.

“August has delivered classic summer fishing on Lake Conroe, and the hybrid striped bass bite continues to be the headline. The break of dawn has provided an exciting topwater bite, with hybrid stripers ranging up to 16 inches and a few keeper-sized fish mixed in. Once the surface activity slows, anglers are finding schools suspended over deeper water where the action continues. Slabs (spoons) and rattle traps have been the lures of choice for anglers looking to capitalize on the early morning bite.

“As the sun gets higher, fish have been holding over deeper water and relating to schools of bait fish. Staying mobile and using electronics to locate active hybrids has been the key to consistent success, with several trips producing quick limits once schools are found.

“Catfish have also remained consistent, especially for anglers fishing cut bait along deeper structure and channel edges in 12 to 22 feet of water.

“Water temperatures on the main lake continue to run into the mid- to upper-80s, while afternoon air temperatures have been pushing into the upper-90s. Getting on the water before sunrise has been critical, as the bite generally slows by mid-morning when fish move deeper with the increasing heat. Electronics remain one of the most valuable tools this time of year, helping anglers stay on bait and quickly relocate active schools.”
